“Despicable Me 3” opened in first place at the North American box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $75.4 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to numbers provided Sunday by the industry tracking group comScore.
The third installment in Universal Pictures’ computer-animated franchise was far ahead of the weekend’s second-place film, “Baby Driver,” which opened with $21 million.
Last weekend’s top-grossing film, “Transformers: The Last Knight,” was third this weekend with $17 million.
“Wonder Woman” was fourth, with $15.5 million, bringing its five-week domestic total to $346 million.
Fifth place went to “Cars 3” with $9.5 million.
Rounding out the 10 most popular movies in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “The House” ($9 million), “47 Meters Down” ($4.6 million), “The Beguiled” ($3.2 million), “The Mummy” ($2.7 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” ($2.4 million).
