A Santa Ana handgun-toting suspect who triggered a police chase that traversed several freeways before ending in a crash has the officers who were in pursuit to thank Friday for dragging him out of his burning car, Los Alamitos police said.
Anthony Salvatore Knaack, 24, was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries received in the crash before being taken to jail, where he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to Los Alamitos police Sgt. Chris Anderson.
About 11:45 p.m. Thursday, police were checking a “suspicious occupied vehicle in a closed business center,” which triggered the pursuit, he said.
The chase, which “spanned several freeways,” ended on the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway on-ramp from the Century (105) Freeway when the suspect slammed the car into a concrete barrier, Anderson said.
As the officers moved in on the suspect, they noticed the “engine catch fire,” he said. They “pulled the suspect from the vehicle and moved him to a safe location and took him into custody,” Anderson said.
Police found a loaded handgun on the suspect, who was booked on suspicion of felony evading and possession of a loaded firearm.
Knaack is also facing trial on a first-degree burglary charge stemming from a break-in that took place on Sept. 3, 2015, according to court documents.
