Sportscaster Mike Walden, who was also known for his role as the announcer on the 1987-91 Showtime comedy “Super Dave” has died at the age of 89, USC announced Thursday.
Walden died Sunday in Tarzana from complications of a stroke, according to USC Sports Information Director Tim Tessalone.
Walden was the television broadcaster for USC’s football and men’s basketball teams from 1966-72, when the John McKay-coached Trojans appeared in five Rose Bowl Games and won two national championships and the men’s basketball team had a 24-2 record in the 1970-71 season, but missed the NCAA tournament because it failed to win the championship of the then-Pacific-8 Conference.
Walden was UCLA’s football and men’s basketball television announcer from 1973-90, including when the Bruins won the 1975 NCAA championship.
Walden was also a sportscaster on KNX-AM (1070), KFI-AM (640) and KTLA- TV Channel 5 and called events for ONTV in the 1970s and Prime Ticket in the 1980s.
Walden began his broadcasting career in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. Following two years of service in the Air Force, he did the play-by- play of his alma mater, Illinois.
Walden then moved to Milwaukee to call Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Braves games and then worked for CBS Radio in Chicago before coming to the West Coast to become USC’s football and men’s basketball television announcer.
Walden is a member of the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame, Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame and USC Athletic Hall of Fame (2009).
Walden, who was known for his distinctive broadcasting style and his even more distinctive wardrobe, announced the failed stunts of the fictional daredevil Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein) on the 1987-91 Showtime comedy “Super Dave.”
Walden is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Gregory and David, daughters Nanette and Julie and five grandchildren.
A celebration of life for Walden will be held at 11 a.m. on March 18 at the Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.
