Riverside County Reports 7 New Coronavirus Deaths, 382 More Cases

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Riverside County edged up by seven Friday, and the infection total widened by 382, although health officials cautioned that not all newly confirmed cases were included in the county’s daily report due to a reporting error by the state.

“A delay in case counts from the state is reflected in today’s numbers, so we expect to see significant increases next week to catch up on the delayed data,” wrote county health officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser on Twitter. “This will not impact data for deaths or hospitalizations.”

The number of known active virus cases countywide is 23,266, an increase of 241 from a day earlier, according to figures. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total of 37,011, according to the county Executive Office.

Officials said the number of confirmed patient recoveries is 13,050. The county defines a recovery as someone who has not manifested symptoms for 14 days.

According to RUHS, 452 people are hospitalized for COVID-19, 23 fewer than Thursday. Hospitalizations include 153 patients in intensive care units.

Health officials said this week that between 118,000 and 175,400 county residents may have been infected by the coronavirus at some point since COVID-19 reached the county, citing preliminary results of a recent randomized antibody test study. The study was conducted over two weekends this month and involved 1,726 randomly selected people.

The doubling time — or the number of days in which documented virus cases increase 100% — is 28 days. A doubling rate of seven days is considered severe.

Most of the county’s deaths stemming from complications tied to COVID- 19 have been people between the ages of 65 and 84, according to RUHS.

The county was advancing into stage 3 of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s four- stage deregulation plan for economic recovery when he announced another round of restrictions earlier this month amid a dramatic rise in infection rates.
