The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Riverside County rose Sunday for the fifth consecutive day and ninth time in 10 days, increasing eight-tenths of a cent to $3.161, its highest amount since Sept. 24.

The average price has increased 4.9 cents over the past 10 days, including six-tenths of a cent on Saturday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It is 3.4 cents more than one week ago and 5.1 cents more than one month ago, but 35.7 cents less than a year ago.

The rising pump prices are caused by the increase in wholesale prices stemming from “increased investor activity,” according to Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California’s corporate communications manager.
