An investigation was underway Saturday into a fire that caused major damage to a large abandoned commercial building in Riverside.

The fire was reported at 9:36 p.m. Friday in the 3500 block of Commerce Street, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived at the location they found moderate smoke coming from the structure and forced entry, fire officials said.

Crews were able to contain the blaze to the area of origin in about 30 minutes but not before it burned the building’s raised foundation, causing $30,000 in damage, officials said.

Arson investigators responded to the scene and were looking into the cause of the fire.

No injuries were reported.
