The number of COVID-positive patients in Riverside County hospitals rose slightly, and 16 more COVID-related deaths were reported in the latest data.

According to the Riverside University Health System, COVID hospitalizations countywide were at 1,065 Monday, up five from the state’s report of 1,060 on Sunday. Of those hospital patients reported Monday, 174 were in intensive care, down from 177 reported by the state a day earlier.

Officials have said some patients may have entered the hospital for other reasons and only discovered they had COVID after a hospital-mandated test.

RUHS does not report COVID data on weekends.

The RUHS reported 16 additional COVID-related deaths on Monday, bringing its cumulative pandemic total to 5,746. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates and can go back weeks, according to health officials.

Officials said the aggregate number of COVID cases recorded in the county since the pandemic began in March 2020 now stands at 437,812.

The number of known active virus cases in the county was 31,041. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 437,812. Verified patient recoveries countywide are 401,025.
