A power outage affected traffic signals and more than 1,300 SoCal Edison customers in Palm Desert for much of the day Tuesday.

The outage began around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Portola Avenue and Highway 111, SCE spokesman Jeffrey Monford. He said the outage was a result of equipment failure.

According to the city, the outage affected traffic signals at the intersections of Highway 111 and Cabrillo Avenue/El Paseo, as well as San Luis Rey Avenue, and asked drivers to drive with caution as traffic signals blinked red.

“SCE crews work all year round to maintain the power grid, and even with their constant efforts, equipment failures occur,” Monford told City news Service.

SCE crews restored power to customers in increments throughout the day and by 3:30 p.m., all power was restored. Monford told CNS that at one point up to 1,330 customers were affected.
