Flames tore through a commercial building in Torrance Monday, gutting much of the structure and causing the roof to collapse, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

The fire erupted around mid-afternoon Monday in the 1700 block of Border Avenue near Old Town Torrance, city officials said. The fire quickly grew to a third alarm as it spread through the structure.

Crews on the scene were forced into a defensive mode, pulling all firefighters out of the structure and instead pouring water onto the building from the exterior. That effort was continuing late Monday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear what type of business was involved, although the area includes several automotive and other industrial businesses. Aerial footage from the scene appeared to show vehicles inside the burning structure.

Border Avenue and Cabrillo Avenue were both closed between Carson and 220th streets as crews battled the flames.
