A man who shot and killed himself after exchanging gunfire with officers responding to a call of an armed suspect in South Los Angeles was identified Monday by the coroner’s office as 38-year-old Calvin Darnell Williams of Los Angeles.

Officers responding at 6:13 a.m. Sunday to the 6600 block of Denver Avenue, near Figueroa Street, were confronted by the suspect, who fired at them, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman said.

The officers returned fire, but it was not immediately known if the suspect was struck, Eisenman said.

Williams was contained in a perimeter when a gunshot rang out, Eisenman said, adding “it appeared he took his own life.”

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No officers were injured.
