A Downey police officer working with a narcotics task force sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting in San Bernardino Thursday and one suspect was killed, a police lieutenant said.

While conducting a narcotics investigation, officers approached a residence in the 1000 block of East Rialto Avenue about 4:30 p.m. and were immediately met with gunfire, San Bernardino police Lt. Richard Lawhead said.

They returned fire and at least one suspect died at the scene and several others were detained, Lawhead said.

The wounded officer was struck three times, once in the buttocks, once in an arm and once in his vest, Lawhead said.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and had stable vital signs when he was taken to a hospital, he said.

It was unclear if anyone remained in the residence and a SWAT team remained deployed at the scene this evening, Lawhead said.
