A suspect crashed a stolen car Friday while being pursued by deputies and then barricaded himself inside a home in an unincorporated area of Whittier before surrendering, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, “was spotted driving erratically by one of (our) airships” about 7:15 a.m., said Lt. Joe Mendoza of the Pico Rivera sheriff’s station.
“Deputies were called to the scene and tried to stop the man, but he crashed (the) car at the intersection of Peck and Rooks roads,” Mendoza said. “He then ran … into a house in the 2300 block of Pearson Avenue. The residents of the house got out safely. We then evacuated the neighboring homes, set up a perimeter and called … the Special Enforcement Bureau.”
Mendoza said deputies “made telephone contact with the man inside the residence and convinced him to step outside and voluntarily surrender” about 8:45 a.m., prior to the arrival of the SWAT team.
