Police on Sunday recovered the car of missing rookie Los Angeles Police Department Officer Henry Solis, who is wanted as a “person of interest” in the shooting death of a 23-year-old man in Pomona on Friday night.
Solis’ Volkswagen Jetta was found about 2 p.m. on the street near the intersection of Main Street and Monterey Avenue, around four blocks from where Salome Rodriguez Jr. was gunned down when a fistfight turned deadly, said Pomona police Lt. Ronald McDonald.
“It’s being worked on by forensics,” the sergeant said.
Solis, 27, has been missing since the killing took place about 3:30 a.m. Friday near Third and Main streets, according to the Pomona Police Department. He failed to show for his next shift, as a probationary officer at the LAPD Devonshire Division.
The victim died at a hospital.
Police said the shooting happened on the street had escalated from a fistfight at a nearby bar.
Solis, whose last known address was in Pomona, is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 185 pounds. He remains outstanding, McDonald said.
“Solis’ whereabouts (are) unknown and we have reason to believe that he knows the police are looking to talk with him,” according to a police statement.
Solis joined the LAPD in June, has worked at the Devonshire Division in the San Fernando Valley since November and has had an unremarkable history in the department, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith told the Los Angeles Times.
Police asked anyone with information about the killing or Solis’ whereabouts to call the Pomona police detective bureau at (909) 620-2085.
