An off-duty Los Angeles County Probation Officer shot and critically wounded a 26-year-old man who reportedly threatened people with a knife outside a shopping center in Ontario.

Adrian Leatherman allegedly approached the officer and another person in the parking lot of a Smart & Final at 1337 E. 4th St. about 9:40 p.m. Friday as they were loading groceries into their vehicle, the Riverside Press- Enterprise reported Saturday.

When the couple refused to give Leatherman a ride, he allegedly pulled out a knife and demanded a ride. The off-duty drew his handgun and ordered Leatherman down to the ground, the newspaper reported.

Leatherman initially complied, but then became uncooperative and struggled with the officer, who shot him once in the upper torso, the newspaper reported.

Paramedics rushed Leatherman to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, ABC7 reported.

The off-duty probation officer was not injured and Letterman will be charged with attempted carjacking, following his released from hospital, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

Ontario police detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at (909) 395-2777.
