A brush fire scorched an estimated 16 acres near the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in Newhall on Sunday, but no one was injured and no structures were threatened.

The fire, reported about 4:40 p.m. in the area of Sierra Highway and Remsen Street off the southbound side of the freeway, forced the closure of two southbound freeway lanes and Sierra Highway at Newhall Avenue, officials said.

A Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter was also dispatched to assist in the fire fight, said city fire spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

A county fire department spokesperson said about 7 p.m. that the fire was 100 percent contained and firefighters were in mop-up mode.
