An investigation continued Wednesday into the discovery of a woman’s decomposed body in the backseat of a car in the parking lot of a West Covina supermarket.

The body was discovered in a Stater Bros. lot at 365 N. Azusa Ave. shortly after noon on Tuesday, West Covina police Lt. David Lee said.

Because there was an Uber sticker on the gray, four-door Volkswagen, detectives contacted the ride-hailing service, according to West Covina police spokesman Rudy Lopez.

Uber spokeswoman Kayla Whaling told City News Service Wednesday that the death is the subject of an active investigation and referred questions to West Covina police, who did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said Wednesday afternoon that investigators have an idea who the woman is, but she had not yet been positively identified due to the decomposition of the body.

The remains were found after someone noticed a foul odor coming from the car and peered inside, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
