A murder charge was filed Wednesday against a woman accused in the stabbing death of her 61-year-old mother at an assisted living facility in Covina.
Athina Sumi Rivera, 43, was ordered to remain jailed on $1 million bail while awaiting arraignment Sept. 29.
Rivera was spending the night in her mother’s room at a facility in the 800 block of West San Bernardino Road. She allegedly got up in the middle of the night and stabbed her mother several times.
Officers responding to a call that a resident was not breathing at 5:11 a.m. Monday found Margaret Yamaguchi on the floor, said Covina police Sgt. Gregg Peterson. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and her daughter was arrested about a half-hour later.
If convicted as charged, Rivera could face up to 26 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
