MERCED – A Santa Clara teenager is being identified as the man who stabbed four people on the University of California, Merced campus before being fatally shot by police, The San Jose Mercury News and other media reported. A school official said 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad, a freshman at the campus, apparently was motivated in the attack by “personal animosities” not involving terrorist or political issues. All of the victims are expected to recover.
SAN BERNARDINO – A 40-year-old San Bernardino police officer was killed early Thursday morning after his vehicle was broadsided by a vehicle driven by a 27-year-old motorist in a possible DUI-related crash. The San Bernardino Sun reports the officer leaves behind a wife and three children.
SACRAMENTO – The California Fish and Game Commission voted Thursday to delay the crab season this year because of a coastal algae bloom that could have left crabs with a potentially fatal toxin called domoic acid, The Sacramento Bee reported.
BERKELEY – More than 700 high schoolers walked out of class Thursday in protest of a racist message left on a computer screen Wednesday. Bay Area NBC reported students said they felt unsafe after the message, that referred to the Ku Klux Klan, threatened a “public lynching” on Dec. 9.
