Two men were shot, one of them fatally, as they stood outside their home early Saturday morning in South Los Angeles during an apparent gang-related, drive-by shooting.

The attack took place at 12:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of 53rd Street, near the intersection with Compton Avenue, said LAPD Sgt. Rick Rodgers, watch commander at 77th Street Division.

“The two men were standing outside when a car pulled up and someone inside starting firing,” Rodgers said. “One man was hit in the leg and the other one in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

The deceased man’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin. The wounded man was in stable condition at the hospital, Rodgers continued.

Both were in their 20s, he added.

Police don’t yet have a viable description of the shooter’s car or the gunman, he said. The case was being investigated by the department’s Criminal Gang and Homicide Division.

Anyone with information on this double shooting and homicide was asked to call the 77th Street Division at (213) 485-4164. All tips can be made anonymously.
