A Lake View Terrace man pleaded not guilty Thursday to bludgeoning his 78-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer.
Joseph Max Kushner, 36, is charged with murder in the killing of Armida Custodio, whose battered body was found May 4 in her Lake View Terrace home.
The criminal complaint alleges that Custodio was killed between May 2 and May 4 and that Kushner used a hammer in the commission of the crime.
The woman’s body was found by officers conducting a welfare check at her home in the 11300 block of Terra Vista Way, which she shared with her grandson. Two days later, the Los Angeles Police Department named him as a suspect in her killing.
Kushner, being held on more than $2 million bail, faces up to 26 years to life in state prison if convicted, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
He is due back in court on July 20, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
