Two women and a toddler were killed in a collision between an SUV and a car just outside Lancaster, near Edwards Air Force Base, authorities said Monday.

The crash was reported at 9:18 p.m. Sunday on westbound Avenue D at the onramp to the southbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

A 2016 Ford Escape was westbound on Avenue D just west of the Antelope Valley Freeway and the white 2013 Honda Accord was eastbound when the driver of the Escape made a left turn into the path of the Accord “resulting in a broadside traffic collision,” said CHP Officer R. Castaniero.

The Escape driver was ejected from the vehicle, Castaniero said.     A 36-year-old woman from Chandler, Arizona, and a 37-year-old woman from Carson were in the Escape and died at the scene, he said.

The 1-2-year-old girl in the Escape was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Castaniero said.

The driver of the Escape, 37-year-old Eric D. Johnson of Palmdale, was hospitalized with major injuries as was the driver of the Honda, 61-year-old Cheryl A. Harris of Lancaster, the officer said.

Johnson is to be placed under arrest, Castaniero said. The reason wasn’t spelled out. The collision remained under investigation.
