A man who pleaded no contest to sexually abusing a 5- year-old girl at his mother’s day care center in Santa Fe Springs a decade ago was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in state prison.

Superior Court Judge Joseph Porras also ordered Robert Andres Martinez, 34, to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Martinez pleaded no contest May 9 to a pair of felony counts involving lewd acts on a child.

Martinez’s mother operated a day care center out of her home in 2005, where the children would have naptime in the living room during the afternoon, according to Deputy District Attorney Brianna Peden.

Martinez lured the girl to his bedroom and sexually abused her during the naptime, the prosecutor said.

The girl — who is now in high school — recently revealed the abuse to her mother, who contacted authorities, according to Peden. Martinez was arrested Jan. 6 by Whittier police.
