Fountain Valley police arrested a bank robbery suspect Wednesday who shut down a bank with a false bomb threat.

Scott Martin Richetts, 50, was arrested while exiting the Santa Ana motel room where he was staying, according to Fountain Valley police Sgt. Tony Luce.

Richetts was suspected of robbing a Bank of America branch at 16192 Harbor Blvd. about 3:45 p.m. Monday, Luce said.

The bank robber grabbed a teller’s hand as he demanded cash, Luce said. As the suspect ran away with the loot he proclaimed he had a bomb in his backpack, which he left in the bank, Luce said.

The bank had to be evacuated while an Orange County bomb squad worked to determine that there were no explosives in the backpack, Luce said.

A tip led investigators to Richetts, who allegedly confessed during questioning, Luce said.

Richetts was booked on suspicion of robbery, making a bomb threat and violating probation, Luce said. His bail was $50,000.
