Covina Police Thursday sought witnesses to an accident in which a visually impaired senior citizen was injured and her service dog was killed when they were struck by a trash truck while walking on a residential sidewalk.

The driver remained at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 7:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of South Stewart Drive, and is cooperating with the investigation, said Covina Police Sgt. Gregg Peterson.   He said officers determined the woman, a 75-year-old Covina resident, “was walking on the residential sidewalk with her service dog when they were both struck by a trash truck that was backing out of a driveway of an apartment building.”

The woman, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel and transported by ambulance to a local hospital, but her dog died at the scene, Peterson said.

The driver, a 47-year-old La Habra resident whose name was withheld, was not injured in the collision, Peterson said.

“The driver of the trash truck is cooperating with the investigating officer and no citations were issued pending further investigation,” Peterson said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Covina Police Department Traffic Division at (626) 384-5674, the watch commander at (626) 384- 5665, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
