An off-duty Los Angeles police officer is hospitalized with critical injuries he sustained when the motorcycle he was riding and an SUV collided in Fullerton, authorities said Tuesday.
The 24-year-old rookie officer, whose name was withheld, may lose a leg as a result of the crash, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations section.
The officer has been on the job for less than a year and was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire station, Lopez said.
The accident occurred on Commonwealth Avenue at Basque Avenue about 10:50 p.m. Monday, said Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus.
The driver of an eastbound 2005 Toyota Sequoia was attempting to make a left turn onto Basque when the SUV struck the officer’s westbound Harley Davidson motorcycle, police said.
The motorcyclist was transported to UCI Medical Center in critical condition. The 19-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was not injured, Radus said.
Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the crash, he said. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, the sergeant said.
The Fullerton Police Department’s Traffic Bureau asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at (714) 738-5313.
