A driver admitted to hitting a bicyclist after a tipster called police Tuesday to report an SUV with suspicious damage, and investigators are now trying to track down the rider.
The witness called police about 9:30 a.m. after seeing the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, which had a smashed windshield, according to Azusa police.
Investigators tracked down the registered owner, who admitted to hitting a bicyclist some time between Saturday night and Monday morning.
“The owner of the vehicle stated that after the collision, friends of the bicyclist laughed,” according to a police statement. “After allegedly speaking to the bicyclist, the owner of the vehicle left the scene, and the bicyclist left the scene, as well.”
The vehicle owner was unable to provide a specific time, date or location for the crash and investigators want to track down the cyclist.
“We have not determined whether or not a crime has occurred at this time,” the police statement says.
The police department released photos of the SUV, which had a gaping jagged hole in the passenger side of its windshield, with the license plate number blurred “to protect the integrity of any possible pending investigation.”
Anyone with information concerning the investigation was urged to call Azusa police at (626) 812-3200.
