A suspicious package that turned out to contain some homemade candles too pretty to throw away forced an hours-long evacuation of the Antelope Valley Mall in Palmdale and a bomb squad response.

A woman who was cleaning her home determined the candles were too attractive to discard so she left them outside the mall’s J.C. Penney store, Lt. Brian Dunn of the sheriff’s Palmdale Station said.

When she heard the mall was being evacuated, she called authorities to see if it was because of the candles, Dunn said.

The items were found in the 1200 block of Rancho Vista Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The mall was evacuated Thursday afternoon and an arson/explosives team was dispatched to investigate, Lt. Brian Dunn of the sheriff’s Palmdale Station said.

The package was found to contain two homemade liquid candles fashioned with canning jars that had fuse-like wicks sticking out of their tops, Dunn said.

The all-clear was given shortly before 6 p.m.

Investigators questioned the candle woman and while leaving the candles behind was foolish, Dunn said, the woman was not in trouble.
