The Palm Springs Police Officers Association announced Monday that it is accepting donations for the families of Sgt. Jose Gilbert Vega and Officer Lesley Zerebny, who were killed in the line of duty on Saturday.

Donations will be split equally between the two families, according to the police association, and may be made at https://give.cornerstone.cc/palmspringspoa .

Checks can also be made out to the Palm Springs Police Officers Memorial Foundation.

Vega, 63, leaves behind a wife and eight children, while Zerebny, 27, is survived by her sheriff’s deputy husband Zachary and 4-month-old daughter Cora.

The Palm Springs POA announced that it is also accepting donations of Enfamil Reguline baby formula for Zerebny’s daughter.

Donations of the formula or any other baby-related items may be made at PSPD headquarters at 200 S. Civic Drive or at the Palm Springs POA at 180 N. Luring Drive.

A separate GoFundMe page — at https://www.gofundme.com/2tejkxwk — has also been set up to aid Zerebny’s family with expenses. The fund, established by her husband’s sheriff’s academy classmates, had reached more than $70,000 of its $100,000 goal by late this afternoon.

The PSPD said it could not confirm the validity of any other sites soliciting donations for the officers’ families.

The Desert Sun reported that GoFundMe shut down two bogus fundraising appeals today — one purporting to raise funds for Vega’s family, and the other claiming to fundraise for Zerebny’s. More than $500 was collected between the two before the deactivations.
