A teenage girl found dead on Sierra Highway in Canyon Country was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, authorities said Tuesday.
The body was discovered about 8:45 p.m. Monday in the 27500 block of Sierra Highway, said Lt. Byron Wainie of the Sheriff’s Santa Clarita Station.
The victim, who was between 15 and 17, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.
A watch commander at the station said he could not confirm a report that the girl was homeless. Her name has not been released.
Deputies determined she was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled, Wainie said. No witnesses have come forward.
The road was dark but there are apartments near the accident scene, he said, suggesting someone could have seen what happened.
Investigators were checking for possible security video for clues to the driver’s identity.
Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station at (661) 255-1121.
