A 21-year-old man was to be arraigned Friday for allegedly arranging online to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex, even though the “girl” was an undercover cop.
The investigation into Pedro Ivan Reyes-Peralta began Tuesday when he allegedly communicated with an undercover detective after he posted a Craigslist ad, seeking sex, said sheriff’s Lt. Kent Wegener.
The detective was posing as a 15-year-old girl and it was made clear that she was underage, Wegener said.
Reyes-Peralta continued to communicate with her to arrange a sexual encounter and was arrested Wednesday morning after he arrived at a location in an unincorporated area near Whittier expecting to meet her, Wegener said.
“The suspect implicated himself during subsequent questioning,” Wegener said.
Reyes-Peralta was booked at the sheriff’s Pico Rivera Station and was held on a bail of $75,000, authorities said.
“Social media sites can be very hazardous places for minors,” said Sgt. Peter Hahn of the Sheriff’s Human Trafficking Bureau.
“Predators are actively seeing juveniles to exploit and victimize, since they believe they are hidden by the anonymous nature of the internet. Parents are reminded to actively monitor the internet activity of their children, to prevent anyone from taking advantage of them.”
