A 25-year-old man was in custody Thursday and being investigated for the death of a 78-year-old woman who was found unconscious with blunt force trauma to her upper body outside of her Alhambra residence.

Police received a call about an unresponsive woman at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of West Garvey Avenue, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting the Alhambra Police Department in the investigation.

Arriving officers found the unresponsive woman, identified by authorities as Moon Cheung, laying on the ground outside her residence. Cheung sustained blunt force trauma to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, Schrader said.

A man knocked on Cheung’s door and showed a family member who answered the door where Cheung was laying, Schrader said. When the family member exited the residence to assist Cheung, the man entered the home and shut and locked the door, she said.

A search of the residence was conducted but the suspect was not inside. A few hours later, police received a call regarding a suspicious person in a shed, a short distance from the Cheung’s residence.

The suspect, who matched the description of the man that knocked on Cheung’s door, was located and detained, Schrader said. Officers found the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Milton Chavez, in possession of an item belonging to Cheung but authorities did not specify what the item was.

Milton was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and homicide detectives were continuing their investigation into Cheung’s death, Schrader said.

Milton is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bail at the Alhambra Police Department jail and is expected to appear in court Friday, according to online inmate records.
