A 19-year-old was shot and critically wounded by a cowboy-hat wearing assailant at the confusing scene of a traffic crash in the Westlake district, police said.

Details were still sketchy, and it wasn’t clear if the shooting and traffic crash were related, nor which incident happened first. The attacker calmly got into an SUV at the scene and left before authorities arrived, according to witnesses.

The victim was taken to a hospital where his condition improved to stable, according to reports from the scene.

The shooting occurred about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and Reno Street, according to Los Angeles Police.

The suspect was a described as a Hispanic male who was wearing a white cowboy hat, long gray shorts and a gray shirt. He got into a newer-model gray SUV that was last seen northbound on Reno Street from Temple Street, police said.
