What’s going on in a desert community where two separate deaths took place in the same block within two days?

At least one of the victims was confirmed to have been murdered in a bloody shooting.

Authorities were asking for the public’s help Saturday after officers followed a trail of blood into a house and found the most recent body.

That victim was identified as a 23- year-old Cathedral City man shot in the Desert Hot Springs neighborhood by a killer who remains at large.

Officers found the body in the home in the 66000 block of Sixth Street, where Jose Gabriel Madrigal Vargas was found mortally wounded about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Desert Hot Springs police Chief Dale Mondary.

He was pronounced dead at the scene about a half-hour later, according to the county coroner’s office.

Two days earlier, another young man was found dead on the same block.

The body of Freddy Morales, 21, of Cathedral City, was discovered around 6 a.m. Monday in the driveway of a home at 66219 Sixth St. Police have not disclosed Morales’ cause of death, but are investigating it as a homicide.

There was no word from police if the two deaths may have been connected.
