An 18-year-old man who fell to his death while hiking with friends in a canyon in Angeles National Forest near Arcadia was a football player at La Serna High School in Whittier due to graduate Wednesday evening.

Jeremy St. Julian of Whittier fell about 100 feet over a cliff in the Chantry Flat area, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics performed CPR on Julian, but he was pronounced dead at the scene around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

“We are all mourning the tragic loss of Jeremy St. Julian,” a message posted on the La Serna High School website says.

School principal Ann Fitzgerald told the Whittier Daily News that the “loss is being deeply felt by our entire community.”

St. Julian’s teammates planned to place his jersey on his seat and to wear his number 54 on their caps at the graduation ceremony, according to the newspaper.
