A truck driver from Utah pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony count of vehicular manslaughter stemming from the death of a bicyclist who was crushed by a cargo container that was knocked loose after striking a railroad overcrossing in Carson.
Wesley Phil Blake, 50, is charged in the Oct. 27, 2015, death of Robert Castorena, 51, of Long Beach.
Blake was driving a truck and pulling a flatbed trailer carrying a shipping container that struck the bottom of the railroad bridge and was knocked loose from the trailer, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The container landed on its side, crushing the cyclist, who had been pedaling down the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Blake, who is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Aug. 9, could face up to six years in state prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
