A man was charged Tuesday with breaking into his grandfather’s Pomona home and severely beating the 82-year-old man, who had obtained a restraining order against him.

Sammeon Christian Waller, 24, pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of elder abuse and first-degree burglary with a person present.

The criminal complaint includes an allegation that Waller inflicted great bodily injury on his grandfather during the commission of the crime.

Police discovered 82-year-old Robert McPherson injured when they were sent about 2 p.m. June 9 to the 2900 block of Gayridge Street to check on Robert McPherson, who had not been seen or heard from in several days, according to Pomona police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.

“Officers arrived on scene and found the rear window of the residence smashed in and moaning sounds coming from inside the residence,” Hagerty said.

Upon entering, the officers found McPherson down and bleeding, suffering from major head trauma, according to the sergeant.

Waller was arrested last Sunday in Sacramento. If convicted as charged, he could face up to 12 years in state prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
