Authorities Monday identified a 57-year-old woman diver who died despite desperate efforts to save her life in a Catalina island hyperbaric pressure chamber.
Gina Castillo had been pulled from the waters off San Pedro by her “buddy” diver a couple hours before she was pronounced dead at the Catalina facility about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Castillo became unresponsive while underwater. However, there was no word yet of what may have caused the deadly incident.
She was taken on a 45-foot Coast Guard vessel to the hyperbaric chamber on Catalina Island.
