A 49-year-old woman driving a new BMW was killed Thursday in a crash into a broken down big rig on the Pomona (60) Freeway in South El Monte.
The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notifications, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, reported about 1:40 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway at Santa Anita Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The BMW was westbound and made a turning movement to the right toward the Santa Anita Avenue off-ramp when it struck a 2013 Peterbilt tractor-trailer combination stopped on the right shoulder due to a mechanical breakdown, the CHP reported.
“The BMW struck the right rear corner of the stopped commercial trailer, continued in a westerly direction, collided a second time into the commercial tractor and then redirected to the north and came to rest on the right shoulder of the off ramp,” according to a CHP statement.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as factors in the crash, pending further investigation, the CHP reported.
The Santa Anita Avenue off-ramp from the westbound Pomona Freeway was closed and a SigAlert was issued, according to the CHP.
The SigAlert was cancelled at 6:03 p.m.
