It was a scary short trip for 159 Alaska Airlines passengers on a routine flight from LAX to Seattle as a pilot was forced to turn around and land shortly after takeoff due to mechanical problems.

But despite the tension on board, the Alaska Airlines jetliner landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport Saturday, authorities said.

Flight 617 reportedly had a malfunction with its trim controls that help determine the angle of the plane and it was flown mechanically after takeoff from LAX, said Los Angeles World Airports spokesman Charles Pannunzio.

It landed safely just after 3:15 p.m. on runway 25 Left and proceeded back to its gate, Pannunzio said.

Firefighters were told the plane had problems with its trim controls.
