A $10,000 reward is being offered for the capture of a sexual assault suspect who attacked a female jogger on a South El Monte trail in June, and sheriff’s officials released surveillance video of the attack in hopes of generating leads.
The assault took place around 5:30 p.m. June 1 in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area near the 500 block of Durfee Road, where the man, without warning or provocation, attacked and sexually assaulted a female jogger, said Deputy Joana Warren of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The victim was able to fight off the suspect and escape before the man rode off on his bike toward Durfee Road, authorities said.
“She (the victim) did a wonderful job fighting him off,” sheriff’s Lt. Todd Deeds said. “She is very brave. She is very smart.”
A composite sketch of the suspect was released, along with the surveillance video. The video shows the suspect riding a bike alongside the woman, who was with a group but had fallen behind. The two appear to chat briefly as the suspect gets off his bike and begins walking with it, before he jumps the woman and drags her into the brush off the trail.
After the woman fights him off, the suspect gets back on his bike and rides away.
The suspect is described as Hispanic, in his 20s, clean-shaven, approximately 5 feet 9 and about 175 pounds. He had a teardrop tattoo under his left eye.
The assailant wore a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants and was riding a black mountain bike, authorities said.
