Firefighters and police were dispatched on a call of a gas odor prior to the 3:30 p.m. explosion, said April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to douse the flames.

The Indio police officer was treated for moderate burn injuries to one arm and is recovering at home, according to Indio police Sgt. Daniel Marshall.

According to the sergeant, 12 to 15 people were evacuated from the apartment building prior to the explosion, the cause of which remains under investigation.
