a crosswalk

Two pedestrians struck by a vehicle while crossing a Moreno Valley intersection Friday were hospitalized in critical condition.

The victims, whose names were not released, were in the crosswalk on Perris Boulevard, at Dracaea Avenue, when they were hit by a motorist heading to work about 5:20 a.m., according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. William Stens.

He said said the pair stepped into the crosswalk against a red light, and the driver did not have time to stop.

They were taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center for treatment of major injuries, according to Stens.

The motorist cooperated with sheriff’s investigators. No citations were issued.

The intersection was shut down for roughly five hours while deputies conducted a preliminary investigation.
