A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Hacienda Heights Sunday that may have involved a hit-and-run motorist, and dozens of vehicles were stopped for more than five hours on the freeway.
Tony Reyna, 50, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 4:30 a.m. Sunday near Crossroads Parkway, according to the coroner’s office and the California Highway Patrol. His home town was not known.
Paramedics were dispatched a little after 4:30 a.m. to the westbound 60 Freeway at Crossroads Parkway, approaching the 605 interchange, on reports that a motorcyclist was down in the roadway, according to a county fire dispatcher.
Officers suspected another vehicle had crashed with the bike, and the driver had fled the scene.
A SigAlert was issued at 4:41 a.m., and all lanes were closed until 10:11 a.m., when the numbers five and six lanes were open.
All lanes were finally opened at 11:30 a.m.
Dozens of drivers were reportedly trying to escape the five-hour-plus stoppage, by making an illegal U-turn on the freeway and driving the wrong way off the freeway at the Seveth Avenue and other offramps. The CHP rushed units there to write tickets for wrong way driving.
