A 30-year-old paraplegic man died Sunday in North Hills when a modified van had a mechanical failure, crashed and rolled over, pinning the victim under it.

The single-vehicle crash happened about 3:45 p.m. in the 9500 block of Woodley Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman said.

The fire department used the Jaws of Life to free the man and take him to a hospital, where he died, a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division said.

The victim’s name was withheld, pending notification of family.

Three others were injured and hospitalized, one in serious condition and two in fair condition, Bastman said.

An axle broke, causing the van to hit a curb and flip over.
