A 44-year-old Bakersfield woman was killed when she exited her crashed SUV and was struck by a vehicle on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Santa Clarita, authorities said Wednesday.

The woman was driving a 2000 Mercedes Benz ML430 on the southbound side of the freeway, just north of Valencia Boulevard, and approached a construction zone, said John Greengard of the California Highway Patrol.

It appears from preliminary investigations that the woman steered the SUV to the left and through the construction cones and crashed into a traffic management arrow board at 11:52 p.m. Tuesday, Greengard said.

After the crash, the woman exited the SUV and crossed over the dirt center divider. She began crossing the northbound side of the freeway when she was struck by a vehicle, Greengard said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and began life-saving measures but the woman was pronounced dead, Greengard said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the vehicle that struck her stopped. Her name was being withheld pending family notification.
