A 33-year-old man remained jailed Sunday after he was wounded in an officer-involved-shooting that resulted from his alleged assault on an off-duty Los Angeles police in North Hills, according to Los Angeles police. .
The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. Wednesday, at 8923 Orion Ave., said Sgt. Andrew Kukla of the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Mission Division.
The injured off-duty officer had just been dropped off by fellow officers when he and another officer were allegedly confronted by Froilan Rodriguez, who struck one of the officers in the head with a metal flashlight, according to the LAPD. Another officer then shot Rodriguez in the abdomen, according to LAPD Officer Sal Ramirez.
The injured officer, who has not been identified yet, made it back to the car that dropped him off, police said. The officers in the car then drove to the corner of Nordoff Street and Orion Avenue to await responding officers from Mission Division.
Those officers located the off-duty officer and the wounded suspect, and both were transported for hospital treatment in stable condition, Kukla said. The suspect was treated for a gunshot wound and the officer for a contusion to his head. A metal flashlight was recovered at the scene, police said
Rodriguez was released from the hospital and was currently being held at the L.A. County Jail on a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. His bail was set at $30,000, according to jail records.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led up to the confrontation, which occurred nearly two hours after a non-injury officer-involved shooting about a mile away.
That shooting took place about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, when officers went to the Palm Tree Inn Motel at 8424 Sepulveda Blvd. in response to a report of a man shooting a gun off in the motel’s courtyard, Kukla said.
Officers shot at the man, but he was not struck, Kukla said. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
