A 17-year-old girl struck by a car as she walked down a Lancaster street died Wednesday of her injuries, authorities said.
The collision occurred about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday on the north side of Avenue I, just west of 15th Street east, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The girl, whose name was not immediately released, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, said Detective Matthew Davis.
The man driving the Ford Focus and his female passenger were taken to hospitals with unspecified injuries. Their names were withheld.
“For some reason, the driver crossed over lanes and struck the girl,” sheriff’s Lt. Dan Nagelmann said early Wednesday. “The investigation is continuing into what happened.”
Nagelmann said investigators don’t yet know whether drugs and/or alcohol played a role and asked anyone with information to call Lancaster sheriff’s station traffic investigators at (661) 948-8466. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
