Authorities Thursday announced a $20,000 reward for help in solving the drive-by shooting death of a 15-year-old girl who was killed in front of her friends in the Charter Oak area near Covina.

Karla Villa was shot about 10 p.m. on Jan. 6 as she stood with some friends on a sidewalk in the 4500 block of North Heathdale Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department. She died the next day at a hospital.

“As the teens monitored their cell phones, a passing vehicle slowed down near them and shots were fired,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “Karla was struck in the head — fatally wounded in front of her friends.”

The reward was offered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
