A suspect wanted for driving recklessly, possibly while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was taken into custody Tuesday on the campus of a Compton middle school after leading law enforcement on a chase in a U-Haul truck.

The suspect sped through Compton streets with a sheriff’s department helicopter in tracking mode. At time, he’s drove in opposing lanes and was seen clipping at least one parked vehicle before he abandoned the truck, scaled a fence and ran onto the campus of Enterprise Middle School in the 2600 block of West Compton Boulevard.

Students could be seen fleeing the grounds as deputies descended on the campus, the suspect was taken into custody about 4:20 p.m.

A California Highway Patrol officer said that agency was made aware about 3:55 p.m. that the suspect was traveling on the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway and officers began chasing the truck soon after.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, apparently changed shirts after bailing out of the truck. He had a gray shirt on when he ran onto the campus and was wearing what appeared to be wearing a maroon-colored shirt when he was nabbed and put into a CHP SUV vehicle.
