The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors renewed two $20,000 rewards Tuesday in hopes of apprehending the gunmen responsible for the unrelated shooting deaths of a teenage girl in the Charter Oak neighborhood near Covina and a 23-year-old man in East Los Angeles.
About 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 6, 15-year-old Karla Villa was standing with some friends in the 4500 block of North Heathdale Avenue when someone shot her in the head. Investigators said the friends were waiting for a social media event to start and were monitoring their cellphones when a dark-colored SUV drove by and shots were fired.
Detectives originally thought the gunfire came from the SUV, but later determined the shots were fired by someone on foot near the teen’s group. The Baldwin Park High School sophomore was pronounced dead late the next day.
The girl’s mother appeared at a February news conference and pleaded for witnesses to come forward. Speaking through a Spanish interpreter, the mother of three younger daughters and a grown son told reporters she wanted the gunman to know the pain he had caused her family.
“I don’t cry in front of them. I have to be strong and not let them see me suffering,” Guadalupe Villa said.
Supervisor Hilda Solis recommended extending the reward, which was set to expire April 29. It will now be available for at least the next 90 days.
Solis also recommended renewing a reward in the 2014 shooting of Alex Gines, also set to expire April 29.
Gines was gunned down on May 17, 2014, while walking in a residential area of East Los Angeles bordered by the Long Beach (710) and Santa Ana (5) Freeways. He was on his way to meet his girlfriend around 1:30 a.m. when he was shot in the 900 block of South Kern Avenue.
Detectives assigned to the case have received no viable clues to date, according to Solis.
She urged anyone with information on either crime to call investigators at the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500 or Crime Stoppers, (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
